At first, Mermaid Awakening doesn’t really ask you to be a mermaid.
You can simply exist on the Gold Coast. Choose an outfit, find work, earn coins, wander around, and make your character feel like someone who actually belongs in this tropical little world. Then comes the moment when the ordinary version of your character is no longer enough. You awaken your mermaid form, discover what your powers can do, and suddenly the same coastline looks rather different.
That change of perspective is probably the most interesting thing about the game. Mako Island, hidden locations, underwater areas and magical abilities give you somewhere to go once you’ve finished playing the surface-level roleplay. Water, fire and ice powers add another reason to experiment, while fishing and jobs provide the quieter activities that make the world feel less like a collection of objectives and more like somewhere you can spend time.
And this is where Mermaid Awakening’s official Discord makes sense. A roleplay game built around secrets naturally creates curiosity. Someone finds a hidden place and another player wants to know where it is. Somebody discovers a useful way to make coins. A new power appears and suddenly everyone has an opinion about it. Development updates matter too, especially for a game that is still adding to its world.
There is also a nice bit of progression hidden behind the peaceful atmosphere. The game has a collection element, with fishing being more than something to do while waiting around. One of its badges is reserved for players who catch every fish, and the tiny percentage of players who have managed it says more about the challenge than any checklist could. Suddenly that relaxing seaside activity has become a completionist project.
Mermaid Awakening works best when you don’t treat it like a game you have to rush through. Spend some time on the surface. Change your look. Work for a while. Swim somewhere you haven’t been before. Then find the part of the world that wasn’t meant to be obvious at first glance.
