Every active Discord user has encountered this strange bug at least once: the app works perfectly, but the moment you click an invite link or try to open a specific large server, the program instantly closes. On smartphones, the app simply crashes to the home screen, while on PC, it goes into an infinite restart loop.
In 90% of cases, this isn’t caused by your internet connection or a “broken” link, but rather by cache overload and animation conflicts. In this article, we have gathered all the working methods to fix Discord on both mobile devices and computers.
Part 1. Solving the Issue on Smartphones (Android & iOS)
If Discord crashes within 2–3 seconds of trying to enter a new server, the problem is almost certainly caused by an abundance of graphics. Large servers are filled with custom animated emojis, stickers, and roles that your phone tries to load all at once.
Method 1. Disabling Animations (The Main Culprit)
You need to manage to go to the settings before the app crashes (to do this, you can open any empty direct message chat).
- Tap your profile icon in the bottom right corner.
- Scroll down to the “App Settings” section and select “Accessibility”.
- Turn off the “Automatically play GIFs” and “Animated Emoji” toggles.
- In the “Stickers” section, select “Never animate”.
After this, Discord will stop wasting resources on loading other users’ animated avatars and smiles upon entry, and the crashing should stop.
Method 2. Hard Clear of Cache and Data
- On Android: Press and hold the Discord icon on your home screen ➔ select the “App info” icon (the i symbol) ➔ go to “Storage”. First, tap “Clear cache”, and then “Clear data”. (Note: You will need to log back into your account.)
- On iOS (iPhone/iPad): There is no simple option to clear cache in the system, so the most reliable way is to completely delete the Discord app, restart your iPhone, and reinstall it from the App Store.
Method 3. Update Android System WebView (Android only)
This system component is responsible for displaying web pages and internal links inside applications. If it is outdated or stuck, Discord will crash every time you click an invite link. Go to the Google Play Store, search for Android System WebView, and tap the “Update” button.
Part 2. Solving the Issue on Computers (Windows & macOS)
On PC, Discord most often crashes due to corrupted hidden update files or a conflict with the graphics card.
Method 1. Deleting Hidden AppData Folders (The Most Effective Method)
A standard uninstallation of Discord through “Add or remove programs” does not erase the corrupted cache. You need to remove it manually:
- Completely close Discord (check the Task Manager to ensure no Discord processes are running in the background).
- Press the Win + R key combination on your keyboard.
- In the window that appears, type
%appdata%and press Enter. Find the folder named Discord and delete it. - Press Win + R again, type
%localappdata%, and press Enter. Find another folder named Discord and delete it as well. - Launch Discord. The program will start a clean installation and download fresh update files without errors.
Method 2. Disabling Hardware Acceleration
Sometimes the feature that shifts the load from the CPU to the graphics card works incorrectly and causes a critical crash.
- Open Discord and go to “User Settings” (the gear icon at the bottom).
- Go to the “Advanced” tab.
- Find the “Hardware Acceleration” option and turn it off.
- Restart the application.
Method 3. Disabling Third-Party Overlays
Discord often conflicts with third-party software that tries to overlay its widgets on top of windows. Try temporarily closing screen recording programs (OBS, GeForce Experience), overclocking utilities (MSI Afterburner, RivaTuner), and software for managing mouse and keyboard backlighting (such as Logitech G Hub).
Alternative Option: Web Version
If you urgently need to access a server (for example, to submit your work for a contest or claim a bonus) and the app keeps crashing, use your browser. Go to discord.do/web/ to open the online version directly in your browser window. The web version runs in an isolated environment and does not suffer from your device’s system crashes.
